Assume you have an existing account with (for example) Wanadoo, and have moved to broadband with BT Broadband. You will find you can still receive e-mail from from Wanadoo (that is, e-mail sent to your Wanadoo or Freeserve e-mail address), but you cannot send e-mail.. To fix this problem, send your outgoing e-mail via "authenticated SMTP". As a BT Broadband customer you should have been given a free BT Yahoo! account, and this will give you access to a server for "authenticated SMTP".
For the settings shown below to work (see step 6), you must have a BT Yahoo! e-mail account and know its username (which is also the e-mail address -- something like yourname@btinternet.com or yourname@btopenworld.com) and password. See if you can login here with the username and password.
[Added Nov 2007] You now also have to tell BT Yahoo! that you wish to be allowed to send mail through BT Yahoo! SMTP servers even though it seems to comes from a non-BT-Yahoo! account. See my main BT setup page for how to do this.
This document applies only to home users of the services called BT Broadband and BT Broadband Basic. The settings are different for other types of broadband account from BT (for example BT Business Broadband), and for broadband from other suppliers.
