Paul Doherty
I am a one-man operation, so all the services listed on this site are delivered by me. This page tells you a bit more about me.Background
I spent 25 years in corporate "I.T." (Information Technology), the last sixteen of which were spent designing and delivering training courses to help people in using, understanding, or selling computers and associated products.
I have a BSc in Systems and Management from City University, London.
Now
I have been a sole trader since 2002, providing IT support for home users and small businesses.
My clients
Many of my home clients are retired or nearing retirement, and most are trying to get to grips with PCs and the Internet for the first time. They often appreciate having someone nearer their own age who can be more sympathetic to the problems they have with the jargon and the "assumed knowledge" that the PC industry sometimes takes for granted.
Having said that, my clients don't have to be retired, and I'm happy to do this sort of work for anyone.
My skills
I see all sorts of problems on PCs of various vintages -- the most common things are Internet problems, mail issues, viruses, and Windows quirks. Quite a few people like me to buy and set up a new PC for them, transferring all the stuff from their own PC if necessary.
Business clients generally want their e-mail network maintaining, websites provided or updated, and servers remotely controlled.
How I work
I know that when I deal with someone I like to know how much it's going cost me, so when I'm working for someone else I'm happy to agree a fixed amount for a particular job, or (if the client wishes) to charge by the hour. I'm always happy to advise on whether something falls within my expertise, and how much a particular subject – whether or not listed here – would cost.
I like to keep my charges fair and reasonable, and I don't believe in call-out charges or hidden costs.
I operate as a sole trader and keep my annual turnover below the VAT threshold, so I don't charge you VAT.

This was my last "corporate" photo, taken in 1997, I think, although maybe it was earlier. |

This is me in July 2006; the last ten years seem to have done terrible damage! If you think I could help you out, e-mail me or give me a call on 01784 439253. |
